The Old Man and the Gun
Hey, it’s Robert Redford guys!!! The man is a legend so I kind of felt like I had to see this film. Especially because there’s a rumor going around that this is going to be his last one?! I don’t know how I feel about that… But if this is his last one he puts in a gem of a performance as notorious bank robber Forrest Tucker. Those of you who were alive in the 1980’s might remember the Over the Hill Gang? If you weren’t alive, then you better just Google it.
Forrest (Redford), Teddy (Danny Glover), and Waller (Tom Waits) rob banks together and are notorious for being “polite” robbers. They hit this point hard in the film, with several bank managers calling Forrest a real gentleman. We also get to see great chemistry between Redford and Sissy Spacek who plays love interest and moral compass Jewel. Casey Affleck rounds out the stellar cast with his portrayal of detective John Hunt who is tasked with tracking down the old timers. Normally I wouldn’t really be into a geriatric criminal gang film, but this grew on me. It’s pretty funny throughout and has a lot of really beautiful quiet moments. Director David Lowery does some interesting camera work that you may find distracting but I found to be kind of cool. Plus Redford proves he’s still got the chops to carry a movie and to create a compelling character.
