A Star Is Born
Janet Gaynor. Judy Garland. Barbra Streisand. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill. But luckily Lady Gaga proves that she is up to the task. She stars alongside Bradley Cooper who also wrote and directed the newest version of A Star is Born. Personally my favorite version is the 1954 one with Judy Garland. Mainly because it’s Judy Garland and I have a mild obsession with all things Judy. But, this latest version really won me over. The story doesn’t change much from the previous versions. Ally (Lady Gaga) is discovered at a club by Jack (Bradley Cooper), an already famous singer with a severe drinking problem. She quickly skyrockets to stardom while his career slides into decline. They fall in love of course but fame, stardom, and addiction cause problems that really can’t be overcome. The songs are pretty catchy and my favorites were Shallow and Always Remember Us This Way. Even if you don’t see the movie you should still listen to the soundtrack because it’s pretty good. Cooper was phenomenal and sounded almost unrecognizable with a super deep voice. And who knew he could sing? But Lady Gaga really stole the show. Her vocals are killer (obviously) but her acting is amazing. She is bare faced for much of the movie and bluntly honest. My favorite moment was when she rebuked a cashier for taking a photo of Jack without his permission. She proves she has quite a range and I’m excited to see if she’ll do another movie anytime soon.
