Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns

Disney continues its theme of churning out remakes or modern versions of older classics. I was hesitant about this because I LOVE Julie Andrews. She is a legend. How are you going to have anyone else play Mary Poppins? But, if you’re going to do it I suppose Emily Blunt is the only one who I can agree with casting. I saw this in a theater full of kids and I have to admit that when the previews concluded and I heard a little girl yell, “Mary Poppins!” in excitement I was sort’ve happy that I decided to see it. It’s a very solid attempt with Emily Blunt leading the way as a more stern Mary Poppins than Julie’s version. Lin-Manuel Miranda dances and sings perfectly as Jack, a lamplighter who accompanies Mary and the children on their adventures. Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson play the adorable Banks’ children and sing and act admirably. Possibly the best cameo is Dick Van Dyke who is 93 and does a tap dance on a desk. You should probably see the movie for this moment alone because it was brilliant. My favorite song was A Cover is Not the Book which is performed by Blunt and Miranda and utilizes the animated penguins as an ode to the original. Okay Disney, you got me. It’s a solid sequel.
