Destroyer
When I saw the trailer for Destroyer many months ago I thought, “Holy shit, Sigourney Weaver looks ROUGH!” And then to my shock I discovered Sigourney Weaver was not even starring in the film, it was Nicole Kidman. If you haven’t heard of this movie, watch the trailer and see if you understand my confusion. Nicole Kidman is unrecognizable. Director Karyn Kusama completely nailed it with this film. I seriously loved it. Here’s the gist, just so you’re not lost. Detective Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) was working undercover with her partner Chris (Sebastian Stan) as they infiltrated a gang in California. Years later she is contacted by the gang leader, Silas (Toby Kebball) and begins to track down the members of the gang in order to take Silas down. This one had me on the edge of my seat wondering what happened in the past when Erin was undercover and what would happen in the future if she managed to track down Silas. Kidman is AMAZING. I think she’s a really great actress usually anyways but she completely disappears into this role. Sebastian Stan has also quickly become one of my faves and he kills it, even though it’s a smaller role. Tatiana Maslany, my absolute favorite actress (and one of the main reasons I had to see Destroyer), plays a druggie member of the gang. Side note: if you haven’t seen Orphan Black you haven’t lived and you need to watch it immediately. You will understand my Maslany obsession once you watch it. Anyways she’s great as Petra and I’m hoping this will lead to other big roles for her because damn, she’s phenomenal. Pretty much everything about this film rocked. Kusama blew away my expectations for this one and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed watching it.
