Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The Star Wars universe has really been expanding since Disney bought the rights. I’m not complaining because I love Star Wars so bring on more movies. But I’m going to go ahead and say that I don’t know what could be worse than the Lucas-helmed prequels. I usually go into Star Wars movies with that as my barometer: better or worse than the prequels? This was far far better than the prequels. I actually really enjoyed this one. It’s basically the backstory for Han Solo and how he came to be the smuggler that we know from the original movies. We see Han (Alden Ehrenreich) as a young kid in love with his friend Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke). They get separated while trying to sneak off their planet and Han’s mission is to somehow get enough money to buy his own ship to rescue her. Of course that’s not all there is to the plot but that’s the gist. If you want a plot synopsis go find one somewhere else, cause a lot happens and I’m not trying to be your Cliff Notes. Ehrenreich was phenomenal as Han. He hit all the right notes, especially the sass, and I could see the connection between young Han and older Han (Harrison Ford in case you have forgotten). Donald Glover as young Lando Calrissian was aces. He really hit the nail on the head with his portrayal, making young Lando as sleazy and likeable as the original Lando (Billy Dee Williams people!). The newer characters were just as interesting. I especially liked Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and his relationship with Han. They played off each other really well and you could see how someone like that might’ve had a big influence on Han’s life. Basically this was a fast-paced heist movie with characters that you know and love. I also want to give you this to encourage you to see the movie: Darth Maul makes an appearance. That’s all I’m going to say. Darth Maul, guys.
