Blindspotting

Blindspotting

There’s been a lot of talk about BlacKkKlansman this year but Blindspotting?? People you need to see this one. I liked it much more than BlacKkKlansman and I wish this was getting more buzz. Director Carlos López Estrada hasn’t done a whole lot of work other than shorts but this is a great first film. Collin (Daveed Diggs) is completing the last few days of his probation and trying to stay out of trouble. This is made more complicated by his best friend Miles (Rafael Casal) who has a knack for picking fights and making bad decisions. Early on in the film Collin is sitting at a red light when a police chase on foot passes right in front of him. Collin sees the cop shoot a young African American man as he says, “Don’t shoot.” Sound familiar? This obviously has troubling consequences for Collin as he experiences nightmares and anxiety. The film hits on so many different hot topics but mainly focuses on race and the tensions surrounding relations with cops. Daveed Diggs (who you might know as the award winning actor from Hamilton!) is phenomenal as Collin. Diggs is also a member of the experimental hip-hop group Clipping and he found a way to weave rapping into even the most intense scenes of Blindspotting. This created emotionally charged and suspenseful scenes that were enhanced by the rapping. This film was intense and powerful and I think everyone should see it.

Film or Movie: Film
You’ll like this film if:
1. You like films about race relations
2. You like Daveed Diggs
3. You want to examine some tough topics about life in America
