Burning
Okay. Burning is a really, really great film. BUT, it’s not going to be for everyone. For starters, it’s a Korean film so you have to read subtitles. I know, I know. Some people just won’t be able to handle that. And you know what? Y’all need to suck it up because this film is worth it. Steven Yeun is in it and plays a total sociopath for all you Walking Dead fans. He’s part of a twisted triangle consisting of his character Ben, Jong-su (Ah-In Yoo), and Hae-mi (Jong-seo Jeon). Both Ben and Jong-su are clearly enthralled by Hae-mi but in different ways. There’s a lot of resentment between the two men who come from vastly different worlds. Ben is handsome and wealthy while Jong-su is working class and living on a livestock farm. Class is an interesting theme throughout. There’s even a mention of a Korean Gatsby thrown into the mix. It seems like you know where the film is headed until the three get high one night. Ben confides in Jong-su that he burns down greenhouses for fun. And that’s when things get crazy. I won’t spoil anything because I can’t really do the story justice anyways. You just need to experience it for yourself. Trust me, it’s worth reading subtitles for two and a half hours. Go see this!
