Christopher Robin Movie Review
Winnie the Pooh. Winnie the Pooh. Tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff. I was a massive Winnie the Pooh fan when I was little. I was so jealous of Christopher Robin because he got to hang out with Pooh all the time. In this installment in the Pooh story, Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is all grown up. He has forgotten his friends from the 100 Acre Woods and is dealing with more adult things. His wife Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) and his daughter Madeline (Bronte Carmichael) don’t see a lot of Christopher. It’s clear he’s lost his way and lost sight of the man he intended to be.
That’s where Pooh comes in! Of course there’s a reunion and Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and the gang help Christopher to reconnect with his childlike self. There isn’t too much mystery as to where the plot is headed. It is a kids movie after all. I loved McGregor as a grown up Christopher Robin. He provided a cohesive picture of an overworked and overwhelmed father and husband while still being believable as the the young, adventuresome child Christopher used to be. Atwell does a solid job as his wife, balancing her marriage to a man who has changed drastically over time.
In addition to the solid acting performances, the special effects were very admirable. They seamlessly integrated the magic of the 100 Acre Woods with London. There were a lot of laughs sprinkled throughout for both kids and adults that I appreciated. I particularly liked the scenes where McGregor had to interact with Pooh on the streets. Lots of good comedic moments during those. I might be biased because I love Winnie the Pooh so much already (I really identify with him because I also have a rumbly in my tumbly often), but this was a fun watch for both new fans and us loyal Pooh fans.
