Downton Abbey Movie Review
I saw Downton Abbey in theaters with two of my friends. One is a die-hard Downton fan. The other is a casual observer who just wanted to get out of the house and hang out for the afternoon. During the movie me and the other die-hard made comments to each other and made friends with the other die-hards that surrounded us.
After the movie the casual observer made a comment about a character that was not factual. My die-hard friend replied, “God, do you even Downton?” That’s honestly the question you should ask yourself before you see this movie. Do you even Downton? Because if you don’t, you should really skip this. If (like me) you love Downton and all of the loveable and even not so loveable characters then you should go see this and settle in for more of the Downton magic that you love.
The plot of this movie picks up in 1927 with the announcement that the Queen is coming to Downton. Prior to her arrival, the Royal Staff who of course are insufferable, waltz into Downton and begin taking over. Royal Staff versus Downton staff is a main theme throughout the movie. Much hilarity ensues as egos and pride are pushed to the limit and schemes arise. There’s also a side bit about an estranged cousin of Lord Grantham who turns up as part of the Queen’s entourage. There’s some drama about an inheritance and Violet really gets to go to battle and use her wit to the fullest. Tom is also not immune to the drama as his Irish loyalties are tested.
I always find it difficult to describe Downton Abbey to people because it seems that not much happens in retrospect. But while I’m watching it, I’m so entertained. That’s a testament to writer and creator Julian Fellowes. He is able to craft the most interesting characters and dialogue so there is never a dull moment despite not a lot of action. It’s also a testament to the actors themselves. It was so fun to see them reprise their roles. It’s incredibly difficult not to root for them as they take on the Royal Staff and reclaim their Downton duties.
This is basically like a longer episode of Downton Abbey except better. Everything is amped up in the movie and that includes the costumes and set design. Since it’s the queen, the ladies elevate their fashion to the highest order possible and it shows. The costumes are beautiful and the set design is impeccable. I’d be shocked if this didn’t get some type of Oscar nomination for costume.
That being said, this is not really a stand alone movie. If you haven’t seen a single episode of Downton Abbey, this will not be enjoyable for you. If you’re a fan of Downton Abbey I fail to see how you won’t thoroughly love this. There was something fantastic about seeing this in a nearly sold out theater with other people who love Downton Abbey and the characters as much as I do. When Violet let out a particularly nasty witticism the theater erupted into cheers. I mean, do you even Downton?
