X-Men: Apocalypse
I had seen X-Men Apocalypse in theaters when it came out in 2016. I remember it being a huge mess of a movie that didn’t make a lot of sense at the time. Re-watching it, I am happy to report that it was not as bad as I remembered. I’m unhappy to report that it still isn’t very good. If you think some of the plots of the previous X-Men movies were convoluted, buckle up!
We open in ancient Egypt to a man who is blue, later on we learn it is En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac), trying to do some sort of transference process inside a pyramid. It is disrupted by what is presumed to be good Samaritan guards. We then jump to 1983 where we meet Scott AKA Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) who is having trouble controlling his powers. He is brought to Professor X’s school for gifted youngsters where he meets Jean (Sophie Turner).
We are flitted to another destination, this time to a fighting ring where Angel (Ben Hardy) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) are duking it out for the entertainment of humans. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) shows up at the fighting ring, continuing her mission of protecting mutants. Three different settings isn’t enough for this movie and we are brought to a fourth location in Poland where Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is living with his wife and child. Yes, you read that correctly. Magneto has a wife and a daughter.
Now that we have all four storylines established, we are brought back to Egypt, the location of the opening scene. Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) makes an appearance in this movie and as she is investigating the return of En Sabah Nur he actually does come to life and return. En Sabah Nur’s sole purpose is to basically wipe out the inhabitants of the Earth using a small group of mutants, and to rebuild a better world with whatever is remaining. If it sounds a lot like Thanos from the Avengers, that’s because it is.
The rest of the movie consists of En Sabah Nur, who I affectionately called The Blue Man for most of the movie, gathering his followers to carry out his plan. Magneto joins him as well as Angel, Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Psylocke (Olivia Munn). This small group is opposed by Professor X (James McAvoy) and the usual cast of characters including Hank (Nicholas Hoult), Mystique, Jean, Cyclops, and Quicksilver. That’s the basic gist of the plot.
Are you confused? Join the club. Like I said, there is a LOT going on in X-Men: Apocalypse. But if you can piece together the intertwining stories, the movie isn’t that bad. It’s a lot of fun to see everyone in action together and there are some cool fight scenes that I found enjoyable. This is not the best X-Men movie, but it’s not as bad as I had anticipated.
