Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Movie Review
Is there anything that is more of a spectacle than a good monster movie? Two (or more) huge creatures beating the hell out of each other with very little plot is really what I need in my life at the moment. Godzilla vs. Kong is the final installment of the most recent monsterverse franchise. In case you want to watch them in order check out Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Do you absolutely need to have seen the other three movies to enjoy Godzilla vs. Kong? Nope. But it helps to provide some context and there are a few returning characters that make appearances. I personally recommend having a monster movie marathon and watching all four in one day. Buy a lot of popcorn.
Anyways, Godzilla vs. Kong opens with Kong trying to break out of the giant dome that he is being held in. He has a sweet relationship with Jia (Kaylee Hottle), a young Iwi native who is deaf and communicates with Kong via sign language. Godzilla makes his appearance in the movie by attacking an Apex Cybernetics facility in Florida. We then flash to Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry) an employee of Apex Cybernetics who hosts a conspiracy theory podcast about suspicious activities at the Apex facility in Florida. Teenager Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friend Josh (Julian Dennison) take it upon themselves to find Bernie and investigate what prompted Godzilla to attack.
Then things get a little wonky. The CEO of Apex Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir) wants to go to Hollow Earth to harness some sort of energy source for one of his creations. Hollow Earth is an underground world found below Earth that is apparently the home of the Titans. It becomes an odd race to get to Hollow Earth to see what’s there and to find this energy source. The thing about monster movies is that the plot isn’t super important. So there’s a lot of excess stuff going on with Hollow Earth, a mechanic Godzilla, and a cybernetics CEO who is power hungry. All of that is cool, but it’s really just a set up to see Godzilla and Kong battle it out. And they do. Several times. The last battle is particularly long and takes place in Hong Kong. Seeing these two monsters smash through skyscrapers as if they were toy Legos was supremely entertaining.
The fight scenes were pretty cool and Kong wields an axe in the last fight which added an extra element of fun. Seeing arguably the two best monsters in movie history going at each other was a sight to see. If you get the chance to (safely) see this one in a movie theater I’d advise it. Or at least watch it on the biggest screen you have available. You’ll want to watch these epic fight scenes on a large screen so you feel like you’re really there. Overall Godzilla vs. Kong is one of the better monster movies. It was intriguing, had an okay plot, and had two legends battling it out. If you want an entertaining blockbuster, Godzilla vs. Kong is the movie for you.
