FAQS

Who are you?
My name is Juli and I’m a long time movie lover and borderline cinephile. I see a lot of movies and figured I might as well share my thoughts on them as I go.

Why should we care what you think?
You probably shouldn’t. That’s why I encourage you to see the movies for yourself to make your own judgement.

Do you have any credentials?

Kinda? I have a Masters degree in Moving Image Studies from Georgia State University so I’m semi-trained to be critical.

What kind of rating system do you use?
I don’t use stars to rate movies. I basically classify them as either a film or a movie which I explain below…
Film: More serious fare that not everyone will love. These could be award bait type films or films where the director is taking a risk and pushing film as an art form.
Movie: More lighthearted fare that casual movie-goers might like. These are the more formulaic movies that are for pure entertainment and don’t push film as an art form.

That’s stupid. Why do you rate it like that?
I was reading a review once where Roger Ebert tore apart the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I agree that it’s not a good film (as in it doesn’t do anything novel or advance film to another level). But it’s a thoroughly enjoyable movie and it entertained me. So I think there should be room for reviewers to say, “Hey this wasn’t a good film in the artsy sense. BUT it’s really entertaining and I liked watching it.”

It seems like you don’t really give bad reviews. What’s up with that?
I have been part of many film sets and I know how difficult it is to make a movie. I admire anyone who tries to create something so I do my best to not tear them down. If I don’t really dig something, I say so. But I try to find at least something I like in each movie.

Why don’t you review any horror movies?
I’m a wuss. That’s the actual reason. I can’t do exorcisms, demonic possessions, or anything paranormal. If it contains any of those things, I’m out. If you see a review of a movie featuring those things I probably didn’t write it.

Can I suggest a movie for you to review?
For sure! As long as it’s not horror. I’m really not kidding around on that one. Fill out the form on the Home Page with any suggestions and I’ll do my best to review it!

That Lily Tomlin quote on the Home Page isn’t 100% correct.
I know! The actual quote is, “If you read a lot of books, you’re considered well-read. But if you watch a lot of television, you aren’t considered well-viewed.” I changed television to movies (sorry Lily!). But the quote really did inspire me and somehow I feel like Lily would be cool with it.
